The police tell us consistently they are struggling, and we are listening


Yesterday the Office for National Statistics (ONS) published the latest crime statistics for England and Wales. And I think it’s vital to emphasise the huge positives that can be taken from yesterday’s release. The offences traditionally measured by the independent Crime Survey for England and Wales, which the ONS itself says is the best measure of crime experienced by individuals and families, have shown a substantial fall – overall crime down 7 per cent in the last year, 38 per cent since 2010 and 69 per cent since crime peaked in 1995.
