For years when Limerick hurling was in the mire, Mackey’s name offered a beacon of hope, a reminder of what they once were and what they could become again. Only now has Limerick hurling managed to earn a favourable comparison. Today’s Munster final offers a chance to match their last provincial three-in-a-row achieved by Limerick 86 years ago. Mackey won a third All-Ireland medal in 1940 and later trained the team that won Munster in 1955. He was synonymous with that great Limerick team.
