From The Times June 1, 1921:Today members of the House of Commons will have the opportunity of clearing their individual reputations and the reputation of the House itself in regard to the proposals for remitting the income-tax upon their salaries. The views of the public have been conveyed to them forcefully in the Press, while many of their own number are already known to share them. We have printed a remarkable series of letters of protest and, indeed, the Government’s action seems virtually without support in the country. It could not have been otherwise. At a time when every citizen labours under the almost intolerable burden of taxation and has been compelled to drastic retrenchment it would be monstrous for the chief taxing authority
