Theatre review: Traveller's drama means well but lacks nuance

Walls and Windows Abbey Theatre; on demandThere’s an uneasy air of detachment throughout the performance of Rosaleen McDonagh’s Walls and Windows at the Abbey. The result is a series of seemingly, even isolated sketches, rather than the personal history the play sets out to portray. The play sets out to portray a world where there is no salvation for, no understanding of, Travellers and their way of life. But, she says, in rehearsal there was “no resistance about ensuring my Traveller reality, my way of being, was integrated into this piece of theatre”. An overdose of well-meaning respect for the author’s “Traveller reality” may be where the play went wrong, leaving the work flailing for connection.
