Not all for-profit long-term care homes in Ontario are equal when it comes to containing COVID-19, an analysis of provincial data by CBC's Marketplace has found. Several long-term care chains in Ontario that operate 500 beds or more have COVID-19 death rates above the provincial average as of Dec. 13. Rykka has two small long-term care homes in Stoney Creek that have had no outbreaks. Many Ontario long-term care homes are older buildings with four-person shared rooms, most of which are owned by for-profit companies, according to data from the Ministry of Long-Term Care. But experts say existing problems in long-term care contributed to the difference in COVID-19 death rates between for-profit and not-for-profit homes.
