“I could see the flames coming out of the door,” Ms. Ewy said, pointing to a boarded-up room. Mr. Daher said he had not been able to afford the diesel recommended for the heater and instead bought a cheaper fuel. “He said he would get us kicked out of the neighborhood if we didn’t pay him back,” Mr. Daher said. Mr. Daher asked many organizations for assistance, but he had difficulty finding one that would help him repay the loan. Mr. Daher and Ms. Ewy will be starting over yet again, but this time with the promise of a future.
