Longtime columnist and author Rodney A. Brooks was able to trace his family's history to Nigeria as a result of newly available records and tools that now provide information about the American experience for Black people. Prior to 1870, U.S. records rarely noted names of enslaved and formerly-enslaved people. Pictured above is a collection of the Brooks family photos.
