Cheung Chau welcomed large crowds on Sunday coming to buy Ping On buns, which means safe and peaceful in Chinese, as Buddha's Birthday met Mother's Day. According to the Sun Ferry, some 4,600 passengers had traveled from Central to Cheung Chau between 8am and noon on Sunday, a surge of about 23 percent over the same period last year. Some said they came to the island to relax as the Covid-19 pandemic faded away, plus today is the Buddha's Birthday and Mother's Day. Although this year's bun scrambling competition was canceled again due to the pandemic, many ritual activities and distributions of Ping On buns continued as usual. Many visitors went to enjoy the traditional festival vibe and buy Ping On buns, hoping their families could stay safe after eating them.
