Three 20th century Wellington sites given heritage status

The Wellington Central Library, which is currently closed due to earthquake strengthening, is one of three which have been given heritage status. Three Wellington sites have been given the heritage tick, including a controversial set of flats and the currently closed Central Library. The McLean and Gordon Wilson flats, built in 1943-44 and 1957-59 respectively, were developed to provide state rental accommodation, and the Gordon Wilson flats remain the only example of 1950s high-rise state housing in New Zealand. Ross Giblin/Stuff The Gordon Wilson flats, and neighbouring McLean Flats, have been given heritage status by Heritage New Zealand. Maarten Holl/Stuff The Wellington Trades Hall has been given heritage status, due to its significance to the union movement.
