Of India’s many subsidies, the kerosene subsidy is the worst. The government has announced that the price of subsidised kerosene will be raised by 25 paise per fortnight until the subsidy goes. Subsidising kerosene means subsidising disease and death for millions through pollution. Just as subsidising kerosene benefits the wrong people and activities, so too does subsidising urea, or rural power, or almost anything else. Ending the kerosene subsidy is a step forward, but the battle for sensible government spending is nowhere near won.
