Sir, We should take great care that the thought expressed by Matthew Parris does not become father to the deed (“A united Ireland would be good for everyone”, Jan 18). The strength of our country lies in the distinctive contribution of each of its elements. We have a particular duty to the loyal people of Northern Ireland of whatever denomination, as well as to ourselves, to support those who cherish their British as well as their Northern Irish character.
