Sir, Matthew Parris (“The patience of voters will snap in the end”, comment, May 29) refers to the “doctrine of ministerial responsibility for operational matters”. Boris Johnson has adopted prime-ministerial responsibility for operational matters across the entire field of government. He would do better by quelling his narcissistic tendencies and by taking a step back to reflect on the bigger picture, to engage in strategic thinking, to consider some of the changes in government that Dominic Cummings had his eye on, and to choose the right lieutenants to whom he could devolve responsibility. Having devolved responsibility, the prime minister should give ministers their platforms from which to deliver, and if necessary, to defend their policies.
