To NP’s Verrechia, Memorial Day ‘just another day of remembering my heroes’NORTH PROVIDENCE – Nick Verrechia says he understands that Memorial Day for many is justifiably a great and beautiful day of celebration and reminiscing, of cookouts, fireworks, and the start of summertime fun. Born and raised in North Providence, Verrechia, now of Scituate, said his mother was one of eight children in a family that settled throughout Lymansville. “My uncle Nicky’s star was on Sack Street.”During World War II, Nick’s father John Verrechia was with Gen. George Patton in North Africa. After Africa, the men had to land on and fight through Sicily, losing fellow soldiers each step of the way, said Nick. One day, one of those shells landed so close to his gun position, its blast wounded him and all his crew, he said.
