In our times, we refer to universities as institutions of higher learning providing facilities for teaching and creating knowledge through research. "At Paris, Oxford and Cambridge, 'universities, as institutions of higher learning were founded in the mid-12th century.' While universities have many similarities with colleges, what distinguishes universities from all other teaching institutions in society is the research function. To bolster the production of new knowledge, "universities have to create new disciplines having their own line of inquiry and methodology." Today's universities endeavor to develop their students to meet 21st century demands — prominently improve on their communication, broaden collaboration, exercise critical thinking and be more creative.
