While the Opening Ceremony traditionally begins the Olympics, the first two days have already taken place with preliminary football and softball matches. The opening ceremony takes place today, Friday, July 23 and sporting events will run across 16 days, culminating in the closing ceremony on Sunday, August 8. As the name suggests, the Olympics are taking place in Tokyo, and are the delayed 2020 Olympics due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Opening Ceremony will be shown live on BBC One and BBC iPlayer with coverage beginning at 11.20am BST.
