The top of the south is already suffering the fallout from Covid-19, with unemployment doubling since the beginning of lockdown. Nelson City Council Mayor Rachel Reese addressed councillors about the situation during an Annual Plan meeting at council chambers on Wednesday. "I've been told that is the highest rate of unemployment rise in New Zealand. She said while under normal circumstances unemployment figures for under-30s would be around 30 per cent, since March 20 those figures were now approaching 45 per cent.
