The tourists, reportedly belonging to Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, were confronted by an angry mob when found smoking hookah on the banks of the Ganges, considered the holiest of Indian rivers. As reported, locals snatched away the hookah and broke it before beating the group of tourists for hurting religious sentiments and making a mockery of the holiness of the Ghat. The locals later handed the men over to the police.
