It’s a parable of black racial empowerment, set in the futuristic fictional African kingdom of Wakanda, with warring tribes and homicidal villains and lots of special visual and auditory effects. Among the sequences is Black Panther, the first black cinematic action hero, clinging to the roof of a Lexus LC500 as it chases, seemingly weightless and invulnerable, across the urban streetscape. Director Ryan Coogler understands his audience and has created what likely will be a hit, measured in financial terms. “Black Panther” isn’t so much a movie as a Stan Lee comic book reimagined for the screen. (Lee the creator of Marvel, has a cameo appearance in the film.)
