Compiled by JO TIMBUONGTHERE should be no concern about the number of pitcher plants being affected in the making of lemang periuk kera (pitcher plant lemang), says lemang trader Shahrinnahar Abdul Latib. “This means the plant is not threatened with extinction as claimed by some nature lovers,” he said in a Facebook posting, as reported by Sinar Harian. Shahrinnahar was compelled to defend his trade when customers started cancelling their orders after finding out that pitcher plants are receptacles for bat and squirrel faeces. Utusan Malaysia reported that further steps were needed to control the harvesting of pitcher plants before they completely disappear. North Johor (Segamat) Forestry Officer Mohammad Ifratshim Muhammad Sa’ed said collecting pitcher plants from government-owned land and forest reserves was an offence.
