HONG KONG—President Trump’s announcement to punish China over its treatment of Hong Kong and other disruptive moves are likely to reinforce Beijing’s belief that Washington is intent on containing China’s rise and harden its resolve to push back. Mr. Trump’s latest actions, announced on Friday, represented “the most comprehensive and severe assault on China thus far,” said Shi Yinhong, a Chinese government adviser and professor of international relations at Beijing’s Renmin University.
