Trump Takes Hard Stand On Softwood Lumber From Canada, Which Has Doubled In Five Years


I say this in jest, of course, but the latest country in the cross hairs of President Trump over trade policy is Canada. The aggrieved, in Trump's estimation, is the U.S. timber industry. The U.S. timber industry, not surprisingly, concurs with the president. (Trump is, of course, complaining about steel imports as well, in an effort to increase U.S. manufacturing, which I wrote about in a post "Sorry, But Blurred Vision Is Behind Trump's Review of U.S. Steel Imports.") But I come before you today not to solve the softwood lumber dispute, which began in the 1980s, but to tell you that the value of these imports from Canada has been increasing for years.
