President Trump. (Alex Brandon/AP)President Trump will nominate Kevin Hassett, a conservative economist and a former adviser to prominent Republicans including President George W. Bush, to serve as his leading economic adviser, the White House announced Friday. An advocate of free trade, Hassett would work alongside advisers with unorthodox views on the subject, such as Trump's chief strategist, Stephen K. Bannon. "It’s an extremely positive development, given the lack of this sort of expertise in this White House," said Jared Bernstein, who served as Vice President Biden's chief economist. The White House said in February that the council's chairman would not be a formal member of Trump's Cabinet.
