Tunisia is planning a $1 billion expansion of its main gateway, Tunis-Carthage International Airport, as the country looks to modernize its aviation infrastructure and accommodate rising travel demand. The project aims to increase the airport’s passenger capacity from roughly 5 million travelers per year to about 18.5 million by 2031. Officials say the upgrade has been included in the 2026 investment budget of Tunisia’s Civil Aviation and Airports Authority, signaling a major commitment to improving transport infrastructure. Authorities had previously considered building an entirely new airport near the capital, but instead opted to expand the existing facility. The overhaul is expected to strengthen Tunisia’s role as a regional travel hub, boost tourism, and support broader economic growth as the country works to improve connectivity across North Africa and beyond.
