Two Cheers for America’s Unit-of-Measure Rebellion

I’m glad someone finally stuck up for our beloved system of customary measurements (“Be a Leader, Not a Liter,” op-ed, May 20). Everything James Panero says is true, especially the part about units being easily divided into fractions, which are much more intuitive than decimals. I would add that the biggest supposed benefit of the metric system is the ease of converting between units, but that no longer matters when everyone carries a pocket-size super computer. Oh, and I’ll add a final point: Who wants to say “Give them 2.54 centimeters and they’ll take 1.60934 kilometers”?
