Two Chicago police officers chasing an armed man were both fatally struck by a commuter train Monday evening in what officials are calling the latest “devastating tragedy” to befall the city’s embattled police force. Their deaths bring the total number of Chicago police officers killed in the line of duty this year to four. Marmolejo and Gary were on foot when they were hit by an eastbound commuter train about 6:20 p.m., Metra spokeswoman Sylvia Cooper told the Chicago Sun-Times. Johnson said there is no stop at the location where the officers were struck and estimated that the train had been traveling between 60 and 70 mph. The last time an on-duty Chicago police officer was struck and killed by a train during an investigation was in 2002, according to the Chicago Tribune.
