The State Department said further evacuations of Americans in Sudan was unlikely for the immediate future, due to uncertain security and a closed civilian airport. One American citizen was killed in crossfire this week, U.S. officials said, but embassy personnel were evacuated unharmed. The U.S. military had deployed forces in recent days to Camp Lemonnier in preparation for a possible evacuation of the roughly 100 or so American personnel assigned to the U.S. Embassy in Khartoum. The State Department denied the local armed groups facilitated the U.S. evacuation.
