By Joshua KirbyU.S. employment ticked down again in October, pointing to a cooling jobs market amid a tight monetary policy, according to a trends index. The Conference Board's Employment Trends Index decreased slightly to 114.16 in October from 114.63 in September, the private-research group said Monday. "While changes have been minimal month-to-month and the index remains elevated, there are signs of cooling," said Selcuk Eren, senior economist at The Conference Board. The Employment Trends Index is a leading composite index for employment that aggregates eight indicators, six of which fell in October, including manufacturing and trade sales, industrial production, job openings, unemployment-insurance claims and the proportion of firms with positions they are unable to fill. The weaker reading tallies with other signs of slowdown in the U.S. jobs market.
