U.S. Consumer Sentiment Slides Again in September, Though Outlook Cautiously Improves


The preliminary reading of the consumer sentiment index declined to 67.7 in early September from 69.5 in August. "Sentiment this month was characterized by divergent movements across index components and across demographic groups," said Joanne Hsu, director of the survey. While confidence in current conditions slipped, consumers' outlook for the coming months rose compared with August. "Both short-run and long-run expectations for economic conditions improved modestly this month," Hsu said.
