An economic index that measures U.S. business trends increased further in January. The Conference Board Leading Economic Index rose 1% to 108.1. Economists polled by The Wall Street Journal were expecting the index to rise by 0.7%. Building permit and financial subcomponent metrics such as stock prices were the main drivers of the gain.
