The initiative is believed to have been commissioned by the Foreign Office after Iraqi leaders asked the British embassy for help AFPA retired police officer is costing taxpayers up to £1,500 a day after he was sent to Iraq to evaluate the prospects for “community policing”. The policeman is meant to be working on a strategy for cities reclaimed from Isis in Anbar province, in the west of the country bordering Syria, but because of the security situation he has barely left the British embassy compound in Baghdad since arriving there in the summer. The officer, who is thought to be a former Metropolitan police commander, is on a six-month contract and is estimated to be earning £500-£600 a day.
