A new $50million wave pool is set to shake up Sydney's surfing community by offering an authentic alternative to catching waves 25km away from the sea. The URBNSURF facility is set to open by summer 2022-23 at Sydney Olympic Park in Homebush an d will give residents the opportunity to practice their surfing skills without unpredictable ocean swells or potentially deadly shark encounters. The Hill road facility, located 14 kilometres west of Sydney's CBD, is expected to see 300,000 guests catch killer waves per year. URBNSURF will also be incorporating conference spaces for customers, baby change areas, play equipment and a 70sqm leisure pool. The Melbourne surfing facility in Tullamarine reported a 25 per cent female participation - but the company is hoping to see attendance increase to 50 per cent at both sites.
