US senators pass bill on Taiwan’s WHA efforts

Staff writer, with CNA, GENEVA, SwitzerlandThe US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations on Wednesday unanimously passed a bill supporting Taiwan’s efforts to regain observer status at the World Health Assembly (WHA). The act calls for the US Department of State to include additional information in its annual reports concerning Taiwan’s participation at the WHA as an observer. The reports should describe changes and improvements to plans to support Taiwan’s observer status at the WHA, it says. Taiwan’s invitation to the 2016 WHA was received late and included new language conditioning Taiwan’s participation based on the “one China” principle. Although Murillo did not directly voice her support for Taiwan’s WHA bid, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs saw the statement as support for the nation’s overall assistance.
