A seaplane start-up is planning to get its on-demand hop-on-hop-off air taxi services airborne around Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area this year, with a long-term goal of establishing similar operations in several Southeast Asian countries. At a virtual press conference marking Seaplane Hong Kong’s launch, founder Steven Cheung said people behind the project are pumping nearly HK$100 million into the service. Seaplane Hong Kong says it will offer three services, including an aerial sightseeing service around Hong Kong, charging over HK$250 for each ride. “People can also hail their flights like Uber in the future with a mobile app, just like having a taxi ride,” said Cheung. Cheung said Seaplane Hong Kong will “avoid operating” routes that have existing air services, or those that are already served by rail.
