Right before Amazon completed its Aug. 28, 2017, Whole Foods purchase, the promise of “lower prices” at Whole Foods — nicknamed "Whole Paycheck" — came up nine times in the press release announcing the news. A year later, average prices at Whole Foods haven't moved much at all, a study has found. In fact, compared with Whole Foods' first round of price cuts under Amazon a year ago, the basket price has actually inched up 1.3%, the study found. For instance, national-brand prices in the basket had risen 2.3% a year after the acquisition while Whole Foods’ private-label pricing went up just 0.3%, the study showed. Throughout the study period, the price of most items in the basket actually stayed flat.
