Unemployment benefits: Jobless are surviving on less than $200 a week in some states -- and urging Congress to act

(CNN) Now that the $600 federal unemployment supplement has expired , Eliajah Carroll is trying to survive on only $200 a week in Rhode Island state benefits. With September rent due in 10 days, Carrollis hoping lawmakers act soon -- even though Congress may not take up extending the unemployment benefit boost until next month. "They are not the ones faced with: 'Should I buy groceries or should I put my $200 this week to my rent?' But the unemployed in two dozen states receive less than $300 a week, on average. Arizona has already started distributing the funds, sending more than $200 million to about 400,000 claimants earlier this week.
