Manuel Cortes, from the Transport Salaried Staffs’ Association, blasted a report drafted by Cabinet minister Grant Shapps and Royal Mail boss Keith Williams. But trains will still be run by private firms – despite research showing almost £1billion could be saved by placing the railways in state control. Mr Cortes said in response: “Great British Railways is nothing but a Great British Con, delivering cosmetic changes and threatening staff cuts whilst delivering nothing of real benefit to our long-suffering passengers. “We’re calling on the Government to actually deliver ‘Great British Railways’ by letting the new public sector organisation run the trains directly.”
