Unit OverviewOn The Learning Network, we’ve always been big proponents of writing as a tool for getting to know yourself and understand the world. Not only do we publish two prompts a day every school day, but we celebrate student writing weekly in our Current Events Conversation column, and monthly via the many student contests we run. But before now, at least for our contests, we’ve always focused on the more formal genres of writing traditionally prized by schools — argumentative, personal and informational essays, book reviews, reader-response commentary and the like. Whether they realize it or not, this year will define them. That’s why we’re starting the new school year with a unit we hope can help young people record, understand and respond to what they’ve experienced.
