A rare 20p coin has sold for almost 200 times its face value after a subtle minting error sent its price soaring – and the Royal Mint say more may still be in circulation. The unusual coin was sold in the UK on eBay for £39.99 on Monday, January 5, despite being worth just 20p in shops. A spokesperson for the Royal Mint said: “In November 2008 a number of 20p coins were incorrectly minted, resulting in the coins being undated. “Mule error, coin does not include a date. That means the 20p sold for almost 200 times its face value – and could now have Brits checking their loose change more carefully.
