Legendary former Springbok lock Victor Matfield has rubbished claims that British & Irish Lions captain Alun Wyn Jones is too old to lead the tourists in South Africa. In an interview with The XV website, Matfield described the Welshman as a "phenomenal player and an immense character". "I've read a lot and heard a lot of talk about how he's too old, how he can't contribute anymore because he's 35, but that’s nonsense," Matfield said. Jones currently holds the world record for the most internationals 157 - 148 for Wales and nine for the Lions. The Springbok great also believes Lions coach Warren Gatland made the correct decision in appointing Jones as captain.
