United are eager to bring in a centre-half this summer with the Villarreal star and Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane their chief targets. United are therefore understood to have stepped up their pursuit of Torres, who has a release clause of £51m. Reports in England have suggested United could offer players to Villarreal to help drive down the fee. Torres meanwhile has insisted he is ‘totally calm’ over his future with his focus on Spain’s Euro 2020 campaign.
