The Loved One, by Evelyn WaughThis novel is classic Waugh, in that it is sharp, cutting, incisive, sarcastic and spares no one. Dennis is left to deal with the funeral arrangements and here he encounters Whispering Glades. Whispering Glades is just as it sounds: plastic, shiny, sanitised and, well, ghastly! It was during this visit that he encountered an institution similar to Whispering Glades, and hence the novel was born.
