The Fifa World Cup, scheduled to be held in Qatar, has run into a multitude of controversies even before it has begun. This comes in the backdrop of criticisms regarding Qatar’s treatment of low-paid migrant workers hired to build the tournament infrastructure. But there is a long, defiant and encouraging history of protests at international sporting events. Recently, sportspersons and teams around the world have taken the knee to condemn racial discrimination. For instance, in India, very few celebrities or sportspersons are known to lend their voices to causes that do not affect the majority population.
