BERLIN—The surprise changes that stripped Volkswagen AG Chief Executive Herbert Diess of some of his core responsibilities on Monday revealed a deep rift between the manager on the one hand and the company’s owners and workers on the other. The move reflected the board’s growing frustration at recent company mishaps under Mr. Diess’s leadership, including software glitches, communication gaffes and botched product launches, people familiar with the situation said.
