Straddling the old county boundary between Lanarkshire and Dumfriesshire, the Lowther Hills cover a compact area of high upland heath. Set above the fertile floodplains of Annandale and Nithsdale, this is classic Borders sheep country and grouse moor, and a strategic natural barrier traversed by ancient byways. Tucked away in the shadow of the hills lies Durisdeer, a hamlet that once marked the start of a Roman road connecting the Solway Firth and the River Clyde. Built during the 1720s on the site of a medieval chapel, it is the kirk for the country seat of Drumlanrig Castle, owned by the Duke of Queensberry and Duke of Buccleuch.
