Scientists at the Queensland University of Technology captured images of the coral bleaching process in action by filming coral as they heated its aquarium waters. (Brett Lewis, Queensland University of Technology)When coral gets too hot, the animal does something strange — it bleaches. Caught on microscope and camera, the result is a mesmerizing, if visually haunting, example of what is happening to coral reefs around the globe. Lewis and his colleague Luke Nothdurft published their observations recently in the journal Coral Reefs. In the Guam coral reef, some 85 percent of the coral has bleached.
