Watchdog urges ‘relentless action’ in bleak assessment of our environment

The environment watchdog has delivered a stark warning that the outlook for Ireland’s environment is “not optimistic”. It says Ireland is already “losing much of what is important in its environment” and “immediate and relentless action” is required to save it. Increasing water pollution and waste generation are among the key concerns highlighted, along with unremitting greenhouse gas emissions. Her remarks come as the EPA publishes its ‘State of the Environment’ report, a wide-ranging stock-take produced every four years. Much of the damage has happened since the first ‘State of the Environment’ report was published 24 years ago, a period which saw massive growth in the population and economy.
