The word “oracy” is educational jargon, coined in the 1960s in parallel to literacy and numeracy. It means the ability to speak fluently, openly and confidently in your own language, whoever the listener. It isn’t like acting a part on stage, although drama teaches rhythm and emphasis, and helps counteract shyness. It means choosing language, ordering thought and having the confidence to express yourself aloud whether at a shop, interview or public meeting. Listen to enough politicians, business people and administrators being interviewed and you notice straight away
