I’m in a good position to say, because I’ve seen it at first hand as my wife recovers from an operation for a broken hip. It is slow, it is painful, and it needs all the help it can get — a decent metaphor for the country. You could say that what Scotland needs right now is a Zimmer frame. I have been watching the NHS on the front line, and I offer it my tribute. In the orthopaedic wards at Ninewells hospital in Dundee, where most of the patients were elderly and demanding, some with dementia, all in need of attention 24 hours a day, the care was constant, devoted and, above all, cheerful.
