The England women’s team reached the final of the competition in both 1984 and 2009. Last week, the Norwegian women’s handball team were fined £1,295 for wearing ‘improper clothing’ during a bronze medal match in the European Beach Handball Championships. They had expressed the desire to wear shorts earlier in the tournament and were threatened not only with fines, but disqualification. The men’s handball team, by the way, are permitted to wear shorts that are ‘not too baggy’ and ’10 centimeters above the kneecap’. I knew there was a double standard for uniforms worn by male and female athletes… but this picture of Norway’s beach handball team says a lot.
