Wellington weather watch: State of local emergency declared, evacuations begin on south coast

Wellington Mayor Andy Foster has declared a local state of emergency as the region’s south coast prepares to bear the brunt of this evening’s storm. South Wairarapa District Council was set to close Cape Palliser Road on Wairarapa’s south coast at 6pm because of high seas predicted. MetService has issued a heavy-swell warning for the south coast from 6am on Tuesday through to 11pm on Wednesday. People living on the south coast and other places previously affected by storms are being advised to leave home ahead of the weather system. Wellington City mayor Andy Foster said the council was expecting to respond to extreme weather along the south coast throughout the day.
